Congratulations to fellow QCMGA Member Neal Lansing for scoring a Double Eagle (Albatross) on the par 5 Quail #7 on Saturday September 21, 2024. Way to go Neal!!! His playing partner was Phil Sidock.
Quoting Neal, “We were playing on Saturday September 21. We had a 6:37 tee time starting on Coyote and they were turning to Quail that day. So Quail 7 was my 16th hole. Phil and I were playing the silver/copper combo tees (Phil is recovering from a broken arm and is not quite 100% yet) so on Quail 7 we were playing the copper tees. The tee blocks were in the center of the tee box so it was playing the posted 456 yards (though that is the dogleg distance).
Phil teed off first and drove his ball in the left fairway bunker. I hit a great tee ball for me with a slight draw to the right (I’m left handed) and it rolled out down the right center of the fairway. From my Golf Logic app the GPS distance was 235 yards. Phil played out off the bunker down the fairway about 150 yards. From my tee ball I could not see the green or pin because it was blocked out by the cactus and trees in the scrub area between my ball and the green. I walked to the left until I could get a view of the pin and shot it with my rangefinder. It showed white flag (mid green) 193 yards.
Since we were a twosome we had been waiting all day and the group behind us was catching up to us on the back nine. On Quail 6 I was going to go for the green but things were so backed up I opted to lay up instead. I was going to do the same on the 7th when Phil said “from that drive you have to wait and go for it”. Because of the wait Phil had driven up to his ball down the left side and from his vantage point had a clear view of the whole shot and the green.
When the green cleared I hit my second shot, a 7 wood. And I hit it good. It also had a slight draw so I thought it would be on the right side of the green off just off it. Phil was shouting that it hit right in front of the green and was rolling. He then said it still rolling up onto the green. He then said still rolling and this is looking real good. Then he yells IT”S IN THE HOLE!!! I, of course, having the tree and bushes in front of me didn’t see a thing . . .We drove up to the green, I walked to the cup and yup, the ball was in the hole. Funny thing is since I didn’t see it and Phil did he was more excited than I was.
As I side note I was so pumped I forgot to take the ball out of play and save it and hit it on Quail 8. Fortunately I hit the green and not the lake but the adrenaline was still following and I had my only 3 putt of the day. I remembered after that and saved the ball. It is on display in my living room. This was my second double eagle. I’ve been playing for 55 years and have never had a hole in one but 2 double eagles. The first one was about 40 years ago and I didn’t see that one go in either. Was blocked by a bunker”.
